Join Team CIIC for the Great Birmingham Run
CIIC is looking for runners to join “TeamCIIC” for the BUPA Great Birmingham Run in October. Last year a small team made up of Professor Ben Willcox, Dr Gavin Bendle, and Dr Fiyaz Mohammed, raised £1000 for much needed research into new immunotherapies for cancer. The event takes place on 19th October 2014.
As Professor Willcox points out, last year was a great year to start TeamCIIC: “2013 was recognized as a breakthrough year for Cancer Immunotherapy internationally – with new treatments transforming treatment outcomes for some patients”. “We started small last year, but are hoping to grow this year and so we are looking for folks of all running abilities to join TeamCIIC,” explains Professor Willcox. “Having run last year, I can assure people this is a fantastic event and great fun to take part in. The more money we raise, the more research we can do, and ultimately this means faster progress on new immunotherapies for cancer patients.”
TeamCIIC’s fastest runner last year was Dr Fiyaz Mohammed, who finished in a creditable 1 hour 32 minutes. He comments: “This event is a lot of fun. Ultimately it’s about taking part, raising money, and running safely without injuries. For anyone interested, our partner QEHB Charity has information on their website about how to train for the event. My advice is: start early and build up the distance gradually. And finding a running partner makes the training a lot more fun.”
So if you are feeling you have overindulged over the Easter break, now is the perfect time to enter the BUPA Great Birmingham Run, get in training, and start raising funds !
